I have a great Thanksgiving day morning racing in the 2009 Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. The race was held in downtown San Jose and was known to be extremely popular, i.e. very crowded. I knew that parking would be an issue and also how difficult it is to get any decent warm-up before a run event. With the super 'late' start time of 8:30AM, I knew I had plenty of time to get up early and hit the treadmill at PAC for a brief warm-up. I ran 2 miles at a slow 6.0 mph pace then hopped into the car and heading down to SJ.
It was cold in the AM but I know how much I dislike getting hot so I wore my trisuit. As always, the start of the race was jam packed with energy. I felt great in the beginning and ran out hard since I was already warmed-up. However, the issue with that was that I couldn't sustain the pace of 8min/mile after 2 miles. So then I slowed up and my total average pace was probably a bit lower than it would have been if I had not gone as fast in the first 2 miles. It is so different doing a 10K only run event vs. doing 10K as the third leg of the triathlon. You would think at first that it should be easier but it's less but that is not the case at all because the effort and energy level you can expend
All in all, I had a solid performance. Nothing stellar from a runner's perspective, but not bad to be 44 out of 300 women in age group.
